City of Ghent, Verapaz Bridge
The Verapaz Bridge (previously known as the Handelsdok Bridge in early plans) is a road bridge that will be built over the Handelsdok between 2022 and 2024 and will form part of the R40 ring road in the Belgian city of Ghent.
The future bridge—with two lanes in each direction—will connect Muidelaan with Afrikalaan, after which the R40 ring road will follow a slightly wider route along Afrikalaan-Koopvaardijlaan instead of via Dok-Noord–Dok-Zuid. The bridge will thus also form a new connection between the northern R40 and the R4 and relieve the Muide area of heavy traffic. Dok-Noord and Dok-Zuid, where the R40 ring road runs, will subsequently be made traffic-calmed, and tram line 4 UZ Gent-Muide will be extended along the Muide–Gent-Dampoort station route.
The construction of all these structures is part of the Oude Dokken project, which aims to redevelop the old harbor docks into a new residential area. When crossing the Handelsdok, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to choose from several bicycle bridges: the Batavia Bridge, the Calcutta Bridge, the Matadi Bridge, and the planned Verapaz Bridge.
After encountering major problems with the initial pile installation—partly due to underground obstacles—we were able to find a viable solution thanks to our experience, expertise, and top-notch equipment, allowing construction of the Verapaz Bridge to proceed as planned.
